We may continue to be in lockdown for weeks to come but your local Barham Village Store is very much open! The extended cleaning regimen alongside availability of volunteers has set limits to current opening hours. You can be assured that we are all working diligently to retain the opening hours we have and to extend back to pre-Covid hours as soon as practically possible.

Following our request in last months Shop Talk, we are delighted that a couple of volunteers stepped forward to help Geoff Grabham manage the newspapers. Geoff is in the process of training the new recruits and we’ll keep you posted as they determine how they will work together to fulfil this valued service.

February brings with it a focus on romance with Valentines Day. Look no further to treat your loved one to a special meal close at hand! The shop has a full range of groceries to enable you to cook a complete meal from scratch or if you need a little help, there are great tasting convenience foods such as the range of Chai Curries using high quality ingredients – Jaipuri Lamb, Goan Chicken and South Indian Prawn are some of the favourites with the Chickpea and Mixed Vegetable popular with vegetarians. The Oakhouse range of mini meals include Vegetable Lasagne, Fish Pie and Cottage Pie, great for those with smaller appetites. No dinner would be complete without a good pud! Try Cartmel sticky toffee, chocolate or ginger puddings with a dollop of Ottinge cream or Simply vanilla ice cream. A good range of chocolate, Prosecco and sparkling wines is available too.

It’s also time to practice your pancake making technique on Shrove Tuesday (16th Feb). We are stocking pancake batter mix as well as all the ingredients to make your own. Perhaps try blueberries and maple syrup or mango and honey? If you prefer something savoury, how about tomato and mushroom or ham and cheese? Of course, we have the traditional lemons and caster sugar in store too!
Social distancing and popularity of the shop has inevitably led to longer waiting times than we would like. Even for the most hardy, the prospect of waiting outside in chilly wet weather is less than appealing! We have the use of the foyer in the village hall as needed so don’t let the weather put you off visiting, you can keep warm and dry!
